Medical Turf Wars: Plastic Surgeons Clash With Other Doctors About Who Can Perform Liposuction And Tummy Tucks
By Amy Nordrum @amynordrum email@example.com
A state-by-state battle is underway within the medical profession over who has the right to perform breast implants and facelifts. Plastic surgeons shudder when they see other surgeons offer cosmetic procedures to patients -- services that plastic surgeons say only they are qualified to perform.
More women are expressing interest in plastic surgery to restore a more youthful figure after having children. An update on combined procedures for postpartum body contouring -- addressing the abdomen, breasts, and other problem areas -- is presented in the August issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
In my entire career as a physician I have never found an organization that is so respectful, insightful, and committed to quality training and sharing of knowledge in an effort to continually advance safety, and improve patient outcomes! All who are members are bettered in terms of access to unsurpassed quality of training and education from leaders across several related fields. Unbiased, non commercial true education. Innovators, and those who are changing the face of our field of practice are involved and committed to enhancing education and training for those who wish to be exceptional, and not merely competent. First rate education and opportunities for training - training like we had in our residencies - with direction, oversight, supervision are available where approapriate. We are all life long learners in medicine. But in Aesthetics, it can be difficult to have the same support and educational opportunities. This is what makes the CACS exceptional - those who wish to further their knowledge and training appropriate to their background, can find those opportunities. Opportunities to train with leaders, and innovators. I am a believer in over-training. But in Aesthetics I found it hard to access quality training. And I wanted more than just updates. I wanted rigorous, leading edge information, exposure to the latest advances in the field, and I wanted to hear from true innovators and experts. The CACS provides these types of opportunities. Although I am not a surgeon and will never have the opportunity to become board certified in any surgical specialty- I still want to be exceptional in the non-surgical realm. Through CACS I have been welcomed and able to make myself better in the things I do – even though I will never do any surgical skin excision of any kind. Wouldn’t everyone be a better injector if they knew what could go wrong with a face lift? Even if they are never going to do a face-lift? Shouldn’t we be masters in understanding the technology and how to get the most out of it for patients? CACS allows the mastermind collaborative type of cooperative opportunities to maximize skill and knowledge appropriate to your background and practice. Patient safety, procedural proficiency and excellence are paramount to advancing this field of medicine. When we collaborate, and educate properly, we protect our patients. In the CACS all are welcome to contribute and bring the best of the field forward. I have to pledge my wholehearted support to the CACS and share my deepest gratitude for all they have done in helping me to advance my knowledge and skills immensely over the last 7 years. No practitioner in the field of aesthetics should pass up any opportunities to get exceptional education and training, ever. CACS will keep you on the cutting edge.
I greatly value my membership in the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. The association with like minded professionals and the excellent training courses put on by our members will keep me coming back for years. Thank you CACS.
I have been a member of the CACS for 5 years. During this time I have developed valuable relationships with highly skilled surgeons and cosmetic physicians that have greatly enhanced my practice. I have been serving on the board, have made close friends throughout the organization, and have learned a great deal from my colleageus, the workshops and the meetings. This is a unique organization that provides something no other organization can provide; that is, the opportunity to exchange information and advance the specialty of cosmetic surgery with colleagues who come from diverse training backgrounds and offer unique perspectives on many facets of our specialty! You cannot find this in your individual subspecialty. We have a bright future in cosmetic surgery and I look forward to many years of education and camaraderie with the CACS!
I joined the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery over 10 years ago. I enjoy meeting colleagues and friends at the annual meeting and workshops. The CACS provides educational opportunities as well as exposure to latest technologies and techniques in the cosmetic surgery arena. The multidisciplinary approach and exposure to experts from different fields is always an advantage. In addition, the CACS is the only organization that represents the interest of cosmetic surgeons in the state of California in Sacramento and in front of the medical board. I encourage you to join this wonderful organization and enjoy the camaraderie.
I joined the CACS for education and camaraderie. I have met wonderful colleagues and appreciate learning from my mentors. I now belong because we are at a crossroads. Avaricious third parties are trying to limit our ability to practice our specialty of Cosmetic Surgery through legislation. The CACS is our only political advocate to protect our rights as Cosmetic Surgeons. Thank you CACS!
I am very pleased to be a member of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. I thank the Academy for inviting me to speak at the 18th annual Meeting in Newport Beach on October 30, 2016. It was truly a fantastic opportunity to learn from the very best most experienced surgeons. For me it is also a good way to stay at the cutting edge of the latest advances in our field. I enjoy meeting new members just starting a cosmetic surgery practice as much as I enjoy reconnecting with old friends. I admire and have the highest respect for those surgeons who have dedicated themselves to lead this organization, especially, Dr. Haiavy, Dr. Shumway and Dr. Walter Tom. This organization has aggressively promoted and defended the field of cosmetic surgery in California. I believe that all cosmetic surgeons should be members and participate in order to strengthen our field and be able to practice cosmetic surgery with safety and equality.
The CACS provides for me a uniquely good forum to improve cosmetic outcomes and remain at the forefront of cosmetic medicine. At the same time, through the CACS, I have formed enjoyable and beneficial professional relationships with physicians who share my interests in cosmetic medicine. I now communicate regularly with physicians who are very like-minded, comparing notes, discussing procedures, etc. The CACS is the one professional organization focused on cosmetic medicine in the state that leads the world in consumer interest in cosmetic procedures. It is uniquely positioned to not only advocate for cosmetic medicine, but to be the focal point for the accumulation of new information on cosmetic procedures. The California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery works for me as a primary source of information, collegiality, and professional support for my cosmetic medicine practice. Not only for my benefit, but for yours too, I would love to see even more like-minded professionals become integral elements of our organization.
I neither live in California, nor have initial boarding in a surgical specialty, yet I’ve found a “home” with the CACS. It is an honor to belong to an organization that is all about educating members of all backgrounds in true Webster fashion, peer-to-peer and friend-to-friend.
The CACS is the Premier California Organization representing & educating Cosmetic Surgeons from many specialties! CACS membership is important to both Cosmetic Physicians & patients who benefit from a doctor who emphasizes cosmetic procedures in their practice. The CACS is a powerful force for teaching and has many American and International experts eager to instruct our members on the best cosmetic techniques available today. Join the CACS now because we are your political & instructional society representing Cosmetic Surgery worldwide!
I have found no better place to belong than the CACS. The mentors and experienced surgeons I have encountered and trained with, have gone over and above to make sure I got it. I was met with great hospitality, a desire to teach and advance my practice. The mentorship, training, friendship and sense of belonging to a reputable organization are tremendous.
As a Diplomate of ABCS and as the current president of the Texas Cosmetic Surgery Society, I know how important it is to belong and participate in an organization that truly represents the unique needs and values of cosmetic surgeons at the State level. I have always benefitted from the tremendous learning opportunities and friendships that I have developed through the CACS.
